LATH – New Visual Identity

Visual Identity for a post-industrial music band
2018

LATH is a post-industrial music band from Berlin, formerly known as Lacika and the Hookers. The decision to abbreviate their name called for a new visual identity.

Inspired by the legendary pictograms of musicians like Einstürzende Neubauten, Prince or Aphex Twin, I’ve aimed to design a symbol that would encompass the experience of seeing LATH perform live. The music is raw, utilizing heavy industrial sounds with vocals that recall avant-garde theater productions. The pictogram, constructed from the letters L, A, T, and H, screams in your face with its fist in the air, much like LATH’s front man Laci does on the stage.

Designing identities for bands without the support of big labels and their dedicated graphic design teams requires crafting simple yet distinctive visual language which the musicians can use on their own. Typography is the key building block. Therefore, choosing a unique font helps the band to build their own solid brand over the time. For LATH, I’ve chose the “Retardo” font created by John. A. Matherson, which was found on old CDR of mine onto which I burned freeware fonts. Retardo might have never made it to the typographic hall of fame, but its distorted execution matches perfectly the unsettling soundscapes of LATH’s music.

The red and black color scheme gives the identity yet another strong visual element. In the streets of Berlin, where bands vie viciously for an attention, choosing bold solid colors gives them a competitive advantage.
